A woman continued to complain about a “disgusting” fly-tip on the corner of a suburban street but says the council did not respond quickly enough.

Margaret Newman first reported the piles of rubbish dumped outside 74 Clitterhouse Crescent, Cricklewood, to Barnet Council on August 2.

Photos taken of the scene show a mattress, chairs, bedding, boxes and other items strewn across the pavement and a grassy area on the street corner.

Ms Newman said she reported the dump for a second time using the council’s online system and then spoke to someone at the council “a few weeks ago” who said it would be cleared in three to five days.

But on Thursday (August 22), Ms Newman, whose 90-year-old mother lives in a house nearby, said the fly-tip had not been cleared - and had grown larger as more people dumped their waste on the side of the street.

She said: “It is disgusting. If my mum ever wanted to sell her house and people came down and saw that rubbish, what would they think?

“She stresses about it all the time, and all I can do is get in touch with the council.

“When I spoke to them, they said it would be cleared in three to five days, and I kept sending pictures every week. The only way I can do that is by using a form on the website.

“What is happening now is everyone is adding to it. It’s ridiculous – it is growing every time.”

Barnet Council’s website says fly-tipping will be dealt with within five working days.

The Barnet Times contacted the council about the fly-tip on Thursday, and the following day (August 23), the council said it had cleared the waste.

A Barnet Council spokesman said: “We are aware of this fly-tipping and have been in the process of conducting an investigation into the source of the waste which has resulted in enforcement officers issuing a number or fixed penalty notices.

“This is an issue we take extremely seriously and now the investigation is complete, the waste has been cleared and the site will be subject to routine patrolling by our enforcement officers.”
