artsdepot’s Canada Season goes into round three, featuring two outstanding female Canadian artists. Since 2018, the North London arts centre has been forging relationships with artists from across Canada. With support from Arts Council England and Future Arts Centres, the venue is becoming a permanent focal point for outstanding Canadian performance. This autumn’s shows present two utterly unique personal perspectives in two solo performances by Tamara Micner and Jennifer Irons.

Premiering at artsdepot, Tamara Micner’s Holocaust Brunch tells a remarkable true Holocaust survival story. Vancouver-born and London-based writer, performer and theatre-maker Micner reflects on her experience of growing up as a descendent of survivors, and explores how communities can heal from ancestral trauma. Holocaust Brunch is a dark comedy, recounting a story not typically told, and Tamara Micner serves up beigels and cream cheese as she pries open an intergenerational wound and asks why we remember, and what it might look like to forget.

Created with a team of Jewish and non-Jewish artists, Micner’s moving, funny and thoughtful solo performance will be performed at artsdepot on Thursday, October 17.

Micner invites audiences to reflect how, as the next generation, we can keep memories alive. As part of the creation of Holocaust Brunch, Micner has collaborated with London-based printmaker L. Roberts, who has made a series of original prints, The Trauma Documents, which respond to parts of the story and appear throughout the show as video projections.

Times Series:

In Yukon Ho! (Tales from the Great White North), Jennifer Irons in character as ‘Intrepid Jen’ tells the story of survival, escape and an eventual reconciliation through reconnection with her homeland.

Yukon Territory, Northern Canada is where North America’s coldest temperature ever (-63 degrees Celsius) was recorded. It’s where there are more caribou than people and tossing chainsaws is entertainment. It is where Irons was born and raised, dreaming of leaving.

The Yukon is not all sophisticated fun, but also a genuinely challenging place to live, where escape is difficult and where many people die tragically young. Yukon Ho! - coming to artsdepot on Thursday, November 7 - is the story of Irons’ release through performance, told through a dark, fearless and very funny dance cabaret. Audiences can expect to laugh, holler, quaff very questionable cocktails and learn how to be bear aware.

Jennifer Irons is an award-winning choreographer, working across commercial music videos, film and TV, and making bold new work for theatre. She choreographed a number 1 hit single for Olly Murs and Rizzle Kicks, was Assistant Artistic Director for the Rugby League World Cup and was once charged with teaching Boris Johnson to dance.
