Disruption is expected to continue on the Thameslink line until 3pm.
Train services into London from stations including St Albans, Borehamwood, Harpenden, Radlett, Hendon and Mill Hill could still be cancelled, delayed or revised, after heavy disruption this morning.
It is all due to damage to overhead electric wires between London St Pancras International and London Blackfriars.
Due to multiple incidents at City Thameslink and London Blackfriars yesterday evening, the power was switched off to the railway lines between London St Pancras International and London Blackfriars.
This suspended overnight and early morning services today.
Numerous services were cancelled into the capital during the rush hour and commuters had to pack onto the small number of trains that were running.
All lines are now open but Thameslink is warning commuters that major disruption will last into the mid-afternoon.
Thameslink and Great Northern managing director, Tom Moran, said: "I am sorry for the disruption caused to our passengers this morning.
"Network Rail staff worked through the night to repair the issues and the central London line has now reopened, but significant disruption is expected for the rest of the morning.
"A speed restriction remains in place between St Albans and West Hampstead. Ticket acceptance is in place with alternative operators and rail replacement buses are running where possible.
"I would urge passengers to check for the latest information before travelling at www.thameslinkrailway.com where they will also be able to claim compensation."
