A football team paid tribute to a former player who was killed in action in Afghanistan.
Oxhey Jets hosted a football match for the Royal British Legion on Saturday against Icarus FC, a team made up of current and former RAF officers, in tribute to Private Tom Lake, who was killed aged 29 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion, Princess of Wales’ ‘Tiger’ Regiment on November 20, 2011.
Pte Lake, from Northwood, enlisted in November 2009 and completed his training in May 2010. He was killed in an explosion while patrolling the Jamal Kowi area of the Nahr-e Saraj district of central Helmand.
The match is an annual tradition at Oxhey Jets, with last year’s fixture raising more than £2,000 for the Royal British Legion.
Jets’ founder John Elliott takes great pride in the club’s fundraising activities.
He said: “We have always honoured Remembrance Day. It started with a minute’s silence before games and making sure players had poppies on their shirts. Then we lost one of our own in Tom Lake and it became instantly very personal to us all.”
The match was sponsored by insurance firm Adrian Flux.
