A pharmacy dispenser has made an emotional goodbye after 40 years serving a small community.

Karen Smith, 59, is a stalwart in Leeming Road, Borehamwood, and has been the go-to person for patients who are feeling unwell.

She began working with Mr Gann at Portland Pharmacy at the age of 16 and hasn't left Leeming Road since - until now.

Karen, who lives in Green Street, says she has some "absolutely wonderful years" but says it is now time for a new challenge.

Karen's daughter Gemma Woods invited the Times down to Metro Pharmacy to surprise Karen on her final day on November 29.

Borehamwood Times:

Looking back on 40 years serving the community, Karen said: "All of my customers and patients have been so lovely and that is the saddest thing about leaving. I don't know what I would have done without them.

"I've been a part of people's lives, seen the ups and downs, watched friends grow up and start families. It's been wonderful, absolutely wonderful years."

Borehamwood born-and-bred, Karen joined Portland Pharmacy working with Mr Gann until he retired.

She remained, as Portland became Safedale. Around a year ago, she made the move to Metro.

But after 40 years, it's now time for a change.

Karen continued: "I won't be moving far - I'll be going to a nearby doctors surgery so I'll still be serving the local community.

"But it's just time for a change. I have lots of happy memories and met lots of amazing people. I know the customers are in good hands here and I know they'll get looked after just fine."

Daughter Gemma, who had a Saturday job at Portland during her teenage years, said: "I'm so proud of my mum. She has taught me all the right things to do.

"She is kind and caring. She's our go-to person if we are poorly."

Pharmacist Vijay Dave, who formed a "formidable partnership" with Karen, is also leaving Leeming Road after around 15 years.
