Police say they are carrying out "extensive enquiries" after two shop workers were left with "several injuries".

Hertfordshire Constabulary is investigating an assault at Tesco Express in Shenley which happened last night.

It was reported that a man assaulted two members of staff following a verbal dispute inside the shop in Andrew Close.

The physical assault is believed to have taken place outside the store, at around 10.20pm (Thursday).

It's understood the man was challenged by staff due to a suspicion he may have been shoplifting.

Paramedics were sent to the scene alongside the police and two people, employees at Tesco, were treated for a number of injuries.

Tesco has confirmed they are not badly injured.

The suspect is described as white, in his mid 30s, with dark hair. He was wearing a dark grey jacket with blue jeans.

Sergeant Iain Brunt, of the Hertsmere safer neighbourhood team, said: "We understand that an incident of this nature is likely to cause concern in the community, but we do believe this to be an isolated incident.

"Please be assured that were are conducting extensive enquiries in order to identify the suspect. If you have any information that you think could assist our investigation, please get in contact."

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "We’re grateful for the quick response from the emergency services following an incident in our Shenley Express store yesterday evening. We can confirm our colleague is not seriously injured and we’re assisting the police with their enquiries."
