In October, families paid tribute to a “beloved husband” and “loving wife” who died in a car crash.

Gillian Agnes Williams, 55, and Tony Southwood, 72, died at the scene of the collision in Redbourn Road, St Albans, on October 9

Mr Southwood’s family said: “Tony Southwood, a beloved husband, father, son-in-law, grandad, brother, uncle and friend has left a hole that will never be filled.”

Mrs Williams was described as a “loving wife, beautiful mum, loving grandmother, cherished sister and friend.”

More than two hundred protesters gathered outside Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub against the lack of water in a lake in Veralumium Park, which is part of the River Ver.

The protest organised by the Ver Valley Society called for Environment Agency and water supplier Affinity water to acknowledge how dry the river had become.

Ver Valley Society said it took issue with the fact that the Environment Agency decided to not call a drought and Affinity Water did not call a hose pipe ban.

Environment Agency and Affinity Water said the lack of water was due to below average rainfall over the past three years and many chalk streams are experiencing low flows.

Karen and Warren Binedell from St Albans quit their jobs earlier this year to travel across the continent with their three children - Sebastian, 15, Aiden, 14, and Ella, 12.

The family set off in April and have visited Portugal, France, Spain and Belgium. They have been involved in volunteer projects in exchange for free meals.

Mrs Binedell said: “We were killing ourselves to pay the bills by working longer hours and we didn’t see our family.

“When they were back home, it was so easy for them to get caught up in their own lives and everything revolved around TV and video games.”
