Promising students are welcomed to attend a fair where they can speak to representatives of the leading UK universities and gain advice on how to best apply.

Gareth Thomas, the labour MP for Harrow West, is organising the fourth annual university fair at Whitmore High School on March 2, allowing students to gain advice from representatives of the UK's 30 leading universities.

There will also be a series of five key talks on applying to Oxbridge, studying medicine or dentistry, student finance, STEM careers and degrees through apprenticeships.

It is estimated that 63 per cent of Harrow students continue onto higher education, and Mr Thomas hopes to encourage even more students to pursue this.

Mr Thomas said: “Studying at one of Britain’s leading universities like Oxford or Cambridge can be a goal for all students in Harrow, and not just the wealthy few.

“Academic and professional success should not be restricted to those who come from fee paying schools, it should be available to all in Harrow.

“Thanks to head teacher Sue Hammond and the excellent staff at Whitmore High School for continuing to make this possible.”

The headteacher added that she looks forward to welcoming students and parents to the fair.

This year, there will also be representatives of Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Princeton and other US universities for those considering venturing abroad for their studies.

Before the annual event was organised, students in Harrow did not have easy means to discuss with university representatives before they submit their UCAS applications.

Mr Thomas will also be hosting a similar careers fair, as he asks many of Britain’s leading industries to take part.
