An office worker who helps the homeless during winter is our community hero this week.

Dan Voller, 29, from Watford, volunteers for homeless charity New Hope and helps out at the winter night shelter.

The charity began its winter emergency accommodation in 2018, which runs from December to March.

Mr Voller said he found the charity after doing his own research and since volunteering, he hasn't looked back.

He said he spends a few nights at the shelter serving food and drinks and cleaning beds.

He said: "Throughout my time there I met some of the loveliest people. Some of the service users despite their situation have a smile on their faces.

"They give me a whole new perspective on life. It's nice to always leave feeling like I've made a difference."

Mr Voller also volunteers for the Rickmansworth Gateway Club which runs activities for adults with learning difficulties.

He was introduced to the club by a family friend and he described it as "very warming and friendly". He has been volunteering at the club for nearly seven years.

Volunteers organise activities for members which range from talent shows to sports.

He said: "The club is important for the members might not get out much. They are just such friendly people and I have made so many new friends.

"I can't see myself doing anything different."

New Hope volunteer officer Ekta Gurney said: "Dan is an absolute gem and we are lucky to have him.

"Across the charity, everyone is getting to know his name for the amazing work ethic and dedication he brings.

"He always covers if someone cannot make a shift the last minute. The people coming to the shelter know Dan and trust him - he has a heart of gold.

"He is always happy to help and I can’t thank him enough for all he does."

"We are fortunate to have all our wonderful volunteers across the charity but I feel Dan should receive a special mention for all his support and time he has given."

When told he won our weekly community hero award, Mr Voller said: "I was delighted when I heard. Just so grateful for the opportunity."
