A leisure centre has donated all of its remaining unused food to foodbanks helping vulnerable people.

The William Penn Leisure Centre in Rickmansworth has sent over all of its fresh food and tinned produce to the Trussell Trust which supports foodbanks across the UK.

Following the government’s guidance to close all leisure centres across the UK, these donations took the remaining food which was to be sold at the café and distributed it to people in need.

John Sewell, the area contract manager at Everyone Active which manages the site, said: “We’re committed to helping the wider community and supporting those who may be experiencing social isolation at this time and those who just need a helping hand.

“The Trussell Trust is a fantastic charity and we’re proud to be able to support the work they do during such a challenging time.

“We hope that our donations will offer some comfort and support to those who need it most.”

Councillor Chris Lloyd, Lead member for leisure, said: “I would like to thank Everyone Active for the support that they are giving through this donation. It is really appreciated and many people in the local community will benefit."

Items donated included fresh foods and confectionary such as cakes and flapjacks.

Earlier last month, the manager at Watford Foodbank claimed they hadn't yet seen a "fallout" in supplies during the pandemic.
