Ten recycling centres in Hertfordshire will open next week - but not the site in Borehamwood.

Hertfordshire County Council says it cannot operate social distancing safely at the Allum Lane tip, and is one of six sites that will not be reopening in the short-term.

Despite confirming ten centres will be reopening, the council is urging residents across the county to keep away and to only visit if it is essential.

However, if you do need to make a visit to a waste recycling centre, the closest sites in Hertfordshire will be in Potters Bar and Waterdale on the A405 in Garston.

These centres, which shut on March 24, will reopen from Monday May 11, with strict measures in place.

Visitors to the tips will likely have to queue to get in with a 'one in one out' system in place.

There will be live cameras on the county council's website so you can see how busy a tip is.

Councillor Terry Hone, cabinet member for waste management, said: "Although these sites are reopening, I would urge people to only visit if it’s genuinely essential.

"Most types of waste can be put in normal kerbside bins for collection, or stored safely at home, and this is a much better option at the moment.

"The social distancing measures we’re putting in place to protect our staff and the public mean that visits will take a lot longer than normal and we’re expecting very long queues."
