Barnet has been named as one of the London boroughs with the most roadworks.

Figures show Barnet had 29,388 roadworks over a three-year period – the sixth-highest number in Greater London.

Bromley, Westminster, Merton, Camden and Hackney were the only boroughs with a larger number of roadworks.

Islington had the lowest number, with just 461 roadworks during the same three-year period.

The data was compiled by loan agency Little Loans, which submitted Freedom of Information requests to councils asking them for the number of roadworks carried out in the 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 financial years.

Any authorities that had not responded as of April 8 were excluded.

Some roadworks are carried out by councils and their contractors to repair potholes and carry out other maintenance.

Utility companies and other highway authorities, such as Transport for London – which manages some of the major roads – also undertake work on road carriageways.

A Barnet Council spokesperson said: “Barnet is home to more people than any other London borough – 394,400 people in total. We have more than 750km of roads to maintain – and they all get a lot of usage.

“Roadworks are vital to ensure that our streets do not fall victim to wear and tear, and that we keep them up to the high standard our residents expect.”
