The Watford MP says that he understands “the strength of feeling” as constituents share polarising views on if Dominic Cummings broke lockdown restrictions in his trip to Durham.

MP Dean Russell has stated he is relaying all feedback he is receiving about Watford’s reaction to Mr Cummings, following the clarification last night of his side of events.

The government special adviser spoke at the Downing Street rose garden to admit that his wife and young child travelled to Durham and also went to Barnard Castle to test if he was well enough to drive home.

He said the decision was based not only on fears over a lack of childcare if he became incapacitated with Covid-19, but also concerns about his family's safety.

“I want to assure all Watford residents that as their Member of Parliament, I have personally followed the guidance throughout and have only left home within the rules and to volunteer locally.

“I know people across Watford have really come together throughout this crisis and I thank you all.”

The Watford MP added: “My job is to get results for Watford and this weekend my focus has been on the announcement of the funding for the Abbey Flyer review this weekend, which a great win for commuters.”

Gagan Mohindra, MP for South West Hertfordshire

Watford Observer:

When asked about his thoughts on the situation surrounding Mr Cummings, the South West Hertfordshire MP took the opportunity to thank his constituents for following social distancing measures.

Mr Mohindra said: “Since the Government introduced guidelines on social distancing and self-isolation in mid-March, the residents of South West Hertfordshire have tried as best as they can to behave responsibly and I thank them for their efforts.

“Due to the unprecedented nature of the crisis, room was left for interpretation of the guidelines deliberately so that individual, unforeseen circumstances could be accounted for.

“I have been incredibly impressed with the sacrifices many people have made. Our rates of volunteering and the community spirit shown have also been inspirational.

“I would like to thank everyone again who has followed, and continues to follow, our government’s advice.”

Oliver Dowden, MP for Hertsmere

Watford Observer:

Mr Dowden the first MPs from our areas to clarify his thoughts about the Mr Cummings situation.

The Hertsmere MP tweeted: "Dom Cummings followed the guidelines and looked after his family. End of story."
