Shocking photos show the moment a car burst into flames on the A41 last night.

Motorists watched on in shock as the car, believed to be a Vauxhall Zafira, erupted into a ball of flames on the A41 stretch near Elstree Road, at around 10pm on Monday, June 1.

Photos show the front of the car was on fire, with smoke billowing into the air across the road.

Police and fire crews rushed to the scene after being called to the fire, closing off the road as firefighters battled the blaze.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue says crews found one car well alight in the road.

Watford Observer:

Fire crews rushed to the scene

Footage posted to twitter by Hertsmere Police shows officers cordoning off the road, with the tweet telling people to avoid the area as the fire was put out.

The tweet said : “A41 stretch between Elstree Hill South to Elstree Road is closed due to a vehicle fire.

“Please avoid the area if possible, unknown how long it will be closed for.”

According to one witness, several people were willing to help before emergency services arrived, with some running over to the car to check it was empty.

They said police and fire crews were at the scene within 10 minutes of being called and that the fire was extinguished “promptly”.

Hertfordshire Constabulary says emergency crews left the scene shortly before midnight, and "closures were left in the hands of highways while repairs to the road surface were carried out".

It has not been confirmed if there were any injuries.
