Watford's most accident-prone roads have been revealed by a map that pinpoints crashes on Britain's roads.

Created by two road safety experts, CrashMap highlights the location of every collision on the roads in a given period.

The tool shows you not on the severity of the crash which ranges from slight incident to fatal - but also when it took place, the number of vehicles involved and the number of casualties reported.

The data used is taken directly from official government statistics, which are based on record submitted to them by the police.

The map shows there have been more than 1,800 crashes across Watford, Three Rivers district, and Bushey between 2015 and 2019.

With some of the most congested streets in the county, some readers may be able to guess where the accident hotspots are in Watford.

Ring Road

Navigating Watford ring road is one of the least joyous driving experiences in Watford, especially if you are leaving one of the car parks.

Quite often at a standstill, it is another hotspot for crashes in the town.

More than 60 crashes have been reported, most of them classed as 'slight', with the junctions at Lower High Street, Water Lane, Market Street, and Vicarage Road seemingly the most problematic for drivers.

Watford Observer:

Watford High Street

Watford High Street is now restricted to just a few vehicles due to social distancing measures, but previously cars have been able to use sections, and it is still used by taxis, buses, and delivery drivers.

The map records around 20 crashes in the High Street, of which four were serious and one fatal. This was the death of Gail Miller who died in 2018.

Watford Observer:

Vicarage Road

According to the map, the stretch of Vicarage Road that is home to Watford General Hospital and Watford football club recorded a total of approximately 15 collisions between 2015 and 2016, including two serious collisions.

Most of these were classed as "slight" incidents, however, there were around three serious collisions.

Watford Observer:

Hempstead Road

The major road in and out of Watford is usually bumper to bumper with traffic, while several speed cameras help keep drivers at safe speeds.

Between Watford Central Leisure Centre and the Hunton Bridge roundabout, there are 30 collisions shown in Hempstead Road on the map, including five serious collisions and one fatal crash.

Bushey Arches is a well-known junction in Watford, particularly for how long it takes to reach, especially if you are coming from Watford.

The layout could be slightly confusing for drivers who don't know the area too well so it may come as a surprise that the map records only eight crashes under the arches between 2015 and 2019, including a serious collision in June 2015.

St Albans Road

St Albans Road - a road no learner driver would ever choose to take their test in.

With its busy junctions, shopping parades, and numerous side streets, it is no surprise this road is right up there up when it comes to collisions.

It is one of Watford's longest roads too, and between the town and the A405 in Garston, there have been more than 80 crashes between 2015 and 2016.

This includes one fatal crash in 2016 opposite The Range retail park.

Most of the collisions took place between that retail park and Longspring in North Watford.

The Dome Roundabout

There have been around 24 collisions on or on the approaches and exits of the Dome Roundabout by Asda in Garston, including three serious collisions in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Only two crashes occurred in 2019.
