A FACEBOOK Group has been set up to gather support and numbers to put pressure on Oswestry Town Council to create more allotment space.

The group – named Oswestry Needs More Allotments – has been created for people to add their comments to show the town council that extra provision for more allotments is needed.

The issue was discussed at July’s full town council meeting, with councillor Mike Isherwood bringing forward an item onto the agenda to not only create more provision, but also add in shared spaces for those who cannot tend full time.

It was confirmed during the meeting that Oswestry Town Council can only create more space if requested by members of the public, and there was only a waiting list of 11.

A spokesman said: “There seems to be so much interest in growing vegetables.

“Not only does home-grown produce taste so much better than commercially grown produce but there are so many other benefits.”

Oswestry Town Council is currently investigating community garden spaces and the issue is with the council’s Allotments Committee.
