Plans to build hundreds of homes on the site of a home improvement store have been submitted to Barnet Council.

Developer Redrow wants to knock down the Homebase store in High Road, North Finchley, and build seven blocks of flats ranging from four to nine storeys high.

It would provide 307 homes, with 35 per cent classed as affordable on a “habitable room” basis.

Members of the public can now comment on the plans using the council’s online planning portal before they are considered by a planning committee.

A statement submitted on behalf of the developer lists a range of benefits it claims the scheme would deliver, including “high-quality architecture”, “a new public link through the site”, and a “significant investment in landscaping”.

It adds: “This town planning statement has considered the proposals against the requirements of the development plan and found that it accords with all relevant policies.”

As of Friday (August 28), the application had received more than 20 comments from members of the public, all of which were objections.

Some opponents raised concerns over the height and density of the plans, branding the scheme an “overdevelopment”. Others have claimed it could worsen traffic and parking problems in the area.

The proposals feature 120 parking spaces and 440 cycle parking spaces, while the planning statement notes the site is “well served by public transport”.
