A resident expressed disbelief after finding her street name misspelt on a recently installed sign – across the road from one spelt correctly.

Angela Sheehan, who lives in Montpelier Rise, Golders Green, could not believe her eyes when she spotted an extra letter had been added to its name, spelling it ‘Montpellier’ like the well-known French city.

She accused Barnet Council of incompetence and suggested the bungle could stop letters and visitors getting to the correct address.

“I could not quite believe it,” Ms Sheehan said. “Those two signs are directly opposite each other. It is a bit of a waste of money.

“If people write that on an address where it is critical you spell it correctly, they will not get where they want to go.

“I don’t know when the new sign was put up. It could have been there for weeks.”

Ms Sheehan said she wanted to alert the council to the mistake but could not find a way to upload the photos to its website and explain what had happened.

A Barnet Council spokesperson said: “We would like to thank Ms Sheehan for making us aware of this misspelling.

“We have raised the issue with our contractors and will be installing a new street name plate for this road. Residents are always welcome to report issues such as this to us directly via: barnet.gov.uk/reportit.”
