The idea of a memorial garden in Buckhurst Hill to remember those affected by Covid-19 is being supported by the parish council.

Councillors have wholeheartedly backed the suggestion which has been put forward by local resident Lara Green, whose father died in April.

She has earmarked the flower bed on the corner of Westbury Lane and Palmerston Road for the area which could include a plaque and a small yellow flowering tree.

She told last night's parish council meeting: "It would be a really nice area for so many of us to visit, pass by and also to recognise everyone who has been part of this pandemic - key workers, all of us really - because it has become a major part of our lives."

She added: "It would be a nice place to go to reflect."

Councillor Steven Neville said: "I think this is a wonderful idea. I know of a key worker who died in April who was so young. This disease can affect anybody of any age.

"I like the idea of a memorial at the centre of the flower bed with tasteful planting around it so you can see the wording on any plaque."

Parish council chairman Smruti Patel offered the council's condolences to Ms Green before saying she thought it was a "brilliant idea".

Councillor Ken Williamson described it as a "wonderful idea" adding: "I think your idea is superb."

The parish council voted unanimously to set up a working party, which will include Ms Green, with discussions to take place with Epping Forest District Council who are thought to own the proposed land.
