Residents pulled together over two weeks to tackle the blight of littering in Chigwell.

Volunteers, coordinated by the parish council, chipped in to clean up their streets as part of the nation-wide Great British September Clean campaign, organised by the charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The annual two-week campaign, which concluded on Monday, September 28 saw residents targetting litter hotspots in Chigwell Village and Chigwell Row.

Cllr Pranav Bhanot, chairman of Chigwell Parish Council, said: “Littering is completely unacceptable. It blights our communities and denigrates the environment. As well as removing litter from our streets and countryside, we want to stop it appearing in the first place and I have no doubt that this annual event is having an impact on tackling litter. I wish to thank Keep Britain Tidy and the volunteers for their resolute commitment to tackling this menace head-on – and all those councillors and organisations who have supported this important cause, especially Epping Forest District Council, who provided the necessary equipment and disposed of the collected waste.”

On September 27 volunteers assembled at the Old Maypole to begin a two-hour litter-picking session around the neighbouring streets and the Chigwell Row recreation ground.

This event was the second phase of the project which began on September 19, at the parish offices, on Hainault road.

The chairman of the management committee, Cllr Jamie Braha, added: “It was great initiative and pleasing to see so many residents and Councillors getting involved hopefully we can build on this and try and keep our village clean and tidy”
