A rat-infested Walthamstow takeaway has been shut down by the council.

Environmental health officers from Waltham Forest Council visited Welcome, in Forest Road, Walthamstow, on September 21.

The takeaway was immediately shut down after officers found rodent droppings and a “general lack of cleanliness” inside.

Deputy leader Cllr Clyde Loakes said: “It is disgusting that a business can operate with a rat infestation in place, in such a dirty environment.

“This serious failing created a significant health risk to all customers using the takeaway, which is particularly dangerous in the midst of a global pandemic.”

Pictures from inside the restaurant show numerous droppings in corners and on surfaces, as well as visible brown grime.

The takeaway will remain closed until the council is satisfied the hygiene issues have been solved and there is no danger to the public.

Thames Magistrates Court confirmed the closure was legal on September 25 and awarded the council £864 in costs.
