The number of new cases of coronavirus in Borehamwood is at its lowest levels for months, government figures show.

While there has been no major outbreak of the virus in the town since the end of August, the latest figures suggest the second lockdown has had a positive impact.

But neighbouring Bushey however has experienced a spike in cases over the last week, although the reason behind the rise remains unclear.

The latest data published on the government website shows three wards in Borehamwood (Hillside, Kenilworth, and Brookmeadow) all saw a decrease in the number of cases in the seven days to November 27, compared with the seven days to November 20.

Only Cowley Hill didn’t see a decrease – but reassuringly there wasn’t a rise in the ward either.

In total in the seven days to November 27, 30 people living in Borehamwood tested positive for Covid-19 compared with 46 in the seven days to November 20.

Borehamwood Times:

Hillside ward is light green because it has recorded the largest drop in cases in the area

Borehamwood, unlike other parts of Hertsmere and neighbouring areas like Watford, St Albans, and Edgware, has not been a Covid hotspot for some time.

Bushey Heath, Elstree, and Radlett all at some point over the autumn recorded unusually higher levels of Covid-19 – but cases have completely dropped off in Radlett and Elstree.

But despite being in lockdown, all of Bushey and Bushey Heath has recorded a rise in new cases, which means Hertsmere currently has one of the highest Covid infection rates in Hertfordshire.

Data shows 69 people living in Bushey Heath and Bushey tested positive for Covid-19 in the seven days to November 27, compared with 46 in the seven days to November 20.

It is worth noting the map does not take in account at least 60 more cases found in Hertsmere since November 27.

We'll know more about where those cases were in the coming days when the map is updated.

Hertfordshire County Council data shows those who live in Hertsmere and tested positive for Covid-19 between November 20 and 27 are of various ages.

Of 166 positive tests during this time period, 19 were people aged between 15-19, 18 were 10-14 and 50-54, and 17 were aged 40-44.

Only three were aged over 80, with a further 15 people aged over 60.

Meanwhile, NHS figures released today confirmed a further five coronavirus deaths at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The five patients, aged at least 60-years-old, had all tested positive for Covid-19 and they died on November 30 and December 1.

The total Covid death toll at the trust is now 449.

There were 908 Covid-19 patients in hospitals in the east of England as of yesterday according to government dashboard figures, which is the highest since May 6 - but daily admissions to hospitals in the east have eased off slightly in recent days.
