West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is set to be among ‘hospital hubs’ that will receive the new coronavirus vaccine.
Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said the approved Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine will start at 50 “hospital hubs” in England next week.
Matt Hancock told Sky News there would be “three modes of delivery” of the vaccine.
“The first is hospitals themselves, which of course we’ve got facilities like this,” he said.
“50 hospitals across the country are already set up and waiting to receive the vaccine as soon as it’s approved, so that can now happen.”
The NHS has published a list of 53 NHS vaccine hubs in England which will co-ordinate delivery of the jabs in their areas - West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust is on the list.
Mr Hancock told the BBC that vaccinations will start with the most elderly, people in care homes and their carers, before coming down the age range, with NHS staff and the clinically extremely vulnerable also high on the priority list.
The UK became the first country in the world to give the go-ahead to the vaccine, paving the way for vaccinations to start next week.
The country has ordered 40 million doses of the Pfizer jab, enough to vaccinate 20 million people with two doses, given 21 days apart.
The first doses are due to arrive in the UK on Thursday.
