Hundreds of thousands of pounds have been secured by a council and police service to tackle burglary in an area.

Barnet Council and the Metropolitan Police Service have secured £300,000 to ‘design out’ burglary in and around Hendon Park after a successful bid for Home Office Safer Streets funding.

The area has suffered a disproportionately high number of residential burglaries over a long period, the council said.

The Safer Streets Fund aims to stop offences that blight communities and cause misery to victims from happening in the first place.

The council says Barnet’s share of the cash will pay for measures that have a proven track record of reducing burglary by enhancing the physical security of the ‘built environment’.

This will be through more secure fencing, enhancing CCTV coverage in the area, and the provision of property marking kits and other security measures such as improved door and window locks.

Councillor Roberto Weeden-Sanz, Chairman of the Barnet Safer Communities Partnership Board said “We are committed to stamping out burglary in Barnet as a priority and protecting our residents from opportunistic criminals.

“We are delighted to have secured this extra funding from the Government and will be working closely with the Met Police to put in place measures to crack down on burglary and theft in crime hotspots.”

The measures will be recommended by the Met Police Designing Out Crime Team, taking into account the pattern of burglaries in the area.

It will help reduce the number of burglaries and help improve the safety and security of residents living in the area.

North West BCU Commander, Chief Superintendent Louis Smith, said: “This funding will help make a real difference to the quality of life of residents who live around Hendon Park, an area which has had a disproportionately high number of burglaries in recent years.

“Local officers will work with the Met’s Designing Out Crime Team, Barnet Council, and most importantly the local community to deliver the long-term solutions needed. We will be contacting local residents soon to deliver the best possible scheme.”
