A concrete plant could be built close to a conservation area despite concerns over noise and air pollution.

Barnet Council planning officers have recommended giving the go-ahead to the proposed concrete batching plant at land to the rear of 400 Edgware Road, Childs Hill.

If it is approved by councillors, the plant will produce around 100,000 tonnes of concrete-based products every year.

The council received 162 objections to the plant, with concerns including the impact on air quality, noise, lighting and the nearby Railway Terraces Conservation Area. After changes were made to address some of these concerns, the council received 48 further objections.

Childs Hill councillor Anne Clarke (Labour) said the scheme “will bring heavy industry right beside a conservation area” and “noise, pollution and toxic chemicals to the doorsteps of residents”.

But a report by council planning officers says the proposed development “would not be likely to cause any significantly adverse impacts on local air quality” and “would not be likely to give rise to significant adverse impacts from noise”.

The report adds that the proposed scheme “would not result in any substantial harm to the setting of the conservation area”.

Councillors will decide whether to approve the plant at a meeting of the strategic planning committee on Tuesday, which will be broadcast online from 7pm.
