The final consultation meeting on a document designed to shape a major development centred on a university will be held next week.

Barnet Council is running a consultation on the draft supplementary planning document (SPD) setting out principles for regeneration at The Burroughs and Middlesex University in Hendon.

It will be added to the borough’s local plan – a framework for development drawn up by the council in consultation with the community.

The final meeting, where people will be able to give their views and ask questions, will be held online on Wednesday, February 17 between 6pm and 7.30pm. Residents can book a place by emailing: forward.planning@barnet.gov.uk

An outline business case for the Hendon Hub redevelopment was agreed by councillors in December. It is expected to provide nearly 800 student homes and new facilities for the university, with construction costs estimated at £90 million.

The business case reveals there are several privately-owned properties expected to be bought up to allow the scheme to go ahead. The council intends to use compulsory purchase orders – powers used by public bodies to force private landowners to sell up – if it cannot reach an agreement with owners.

Grade-II listed buildings Hendon Town Hall, Hendon Public Library and Hendon Fire Station fall within the development area. The plans involve moving the library from its current building to make way for a business school for the university.

Several community uses, currently located in and around the Meritage Centre, will be relocated to other parts of Hendon if the development goes ahead, the business case reveals.

More information on the consultation and details of how to provide feedback are available here.

The closing date for the council to receive questionnaires and comments on the SPD is Monday, February 22.
