A creative 11-year-old girl from North Finchley has won a national writing competition for her touching story based on everyday heroes.

Isabella Mahdavi, who attends Frith Manor Primary School has her story ‘My Human’ published in a brand-new book after winning the Pearson’s My Twist on a Tale writing competition.

The competition encouraged children between the ages of four and 19 to let their imagination run wild as they wrote a story around the theme of everyday heroes.

Isabella’s story is narrated by a guide dog called Bear, who has a disabled human. When Bear’s human becomes ill with a cough, the two are separated but Bear stays at the hospital with the boy’s mother.

Bear is then told by a nurse how her father was put in a ward after contracting a virus.

Of course the story is loosely based off the Covid-19 pandemic, and pays tribute to the NHS workers and also all Covid-19 patients – as Isabella declares them all as everyday heroes.

Talking about the inspiration of her story, she said: “I love dogs, and I have a dog at home, so I definitely wanted to include a guide dog in my story. I often wonder what my dog is thinking and feeling and it was really fun to write from a dog’s perspective.

“I also wanted to include multiple heroes, as NHS workers and Covid-19 patients do not deserve to go unmentioned as heroes. NHS workers risk their lives every day to help people in need, even though it puts them and their families in danger, and if that isn’t heroic I don’t know what is!”

Isabella’s story and 14 other writers was recognised from the over 1,200 children and young people that entered the competition.

All the wining tales featured in ‘My Twist on a Tale: Everyday Heroes Wining Stories’ to celebrate World Book Day earlier this month (March 4), and it is available to download on Pearson’s website.
