A Watford mum is fundraising to build pens for abandoned cats as part of her voluntary work saving forsaken felines in the area.

Dawn Lewis, 49, set up Kitty Kat Rescue and Rehoming 12 years ago and is now looking to raise £6k to build the isolation pens in her garden.

The South Oxhey resident, who works full time as an accounts manager in Watford, started helping cats after witnessing one being dumped at her local vet - who she then went on to adopt.

The 49-year-old said she does everything from home, is self-funded, and because she is not a registered charity she relies on donations.

She added: “With the amount of stray and sick animals I have been restricted in the past but with these two isolation pens it means that I can help more cats and kittens and get them back to health and find their forever homes.”

Dawn, who has adopted five cats herself, said she raises money through raffles, tombolas and car boot sales, and accepts any bits that are sellable.

She continued: "I love what I do and even if I can save a few animals from abuse or take them off the streets and find forever homes then this makes me happy.

"Each animal I rescue is taken to the vets to have a full health check and they are chipped, flead and wormed.

"They will be spayed/neutered if over 2kg and 4 months and will get at least their first vaccination."

Dawn explained that before rehoming an animal she carries out checks to ensure it is going to a suitable "forever home".

She urged anyone interested in adopting a cat to get in touch, but warned she is "really fussy" about rehoming so people should not be offended if refused.

“I do not rehome to people living in flats above 1st floor or homes on, or close to, busy roads.

“If you think that you may be able to offer a loving forever home then please send me a message.”
