A 16-year-old boy who took his A-levels early has been offered a place at Oxford University.

Tao Lustigman, a student at Friern Barnet School, has taken his A-levels two years early alongside his GCSEs.

He already had an A* in A level maths from autumn 2020 but he received an A* in further maths and an A in Economics on results day on Tuesday.

He was offered a place at Christ Church, Oxford University, to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

"It represents a tremendous accomplishment for both Tao and Friern Barnet School," the school said.

"Tao has worked incredibly hard to fulfil his ambition to go to Oxford University. Everyone at the school is delighted to see him succeed. Nothing celebrates the school’s moto of ‘enjoy and excel’ more than this achievement.

"Tao has been a smashing student; he is a popular student who is very motivated with a wide range of interests."

Students across Barnet received their A-level and BTEC results yesterday but with grades determined differently because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year students have been awarded grades by teachers and have only be assessed on what they have been taught, not what they may have missed.

Teachers have based their judgements on students’ performance on a range of evidence, which could include mock exams, non-exam assessment (coursework) in some subjects, as well as other assessments done in class.

Teachers have used an evidence-based approach, so that students, their parents and carers, and all those who use the grades awarded this summer can see how their final grade has been arrived at and know that they have been determined objectively.

Among schools celebrating their pupil’s results were St Mary’s and St John’s CE School in Hendon, which said it is “brimming with pride as we share an exceptional set of A-level results”.

According to their year-13 results table, 100 per cent of pupils received an A* or A in further mathematics.

St Andrew the Apostle School near Whetstone also celebrated “outstanding” results achieved by A-level students this year.

A total of 25 per cent of all grades awarded were A*/A whilst 54 per cent of all grades awarded were A*/A/B.

Head teacher Indira Warwick said: “It is a privilege to see how well our Year 13 students have done- they thoroughly deserve every happiness.”

Barnet Council councillor David Longstaff, Chairman of the Children, Education & Safeguarding Committee, said: “We want to also say congratulations and well done to all students receiving their A-level and BTEC results today. In spite of the challenges, we are confident that our students have come through this year with the qualifications, life skills and practical experience to prepare them for their next stage of education and the jobs and industries of the future.”
