Rishi Sunak has announced £2 million for a new Beatles attraction on the Liverpool waterfront as park of the Autumn Budget today.

Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, who was born in Liverpool, was at the forefront of securing the funding, according to Sunak.

He unveiled the news during his Budget speech today, which also announced that inflation was likely to rise, tax relief for museums and galleries and extra funding for schools.

“We’re investing £850 million to protect museums, galleries, libraries and local culture,” said Sunak.

“And thanks to the culture secretary over 800 regional museums and libraries will be renovated, restored and revived.

“And she secured up to £2 million to start work on a new Beatles attractions on the Liverpool waterfront.”

Many have taken to social media to point out that Liverpool already has an iconic museum near the famous Albert Docks in the city centre, which opened in 2018, and the money would be better spent elsewhere.

“I'm not from Liverpool, but when I've been it seems you aren't exactly lacking in Beatles stuff! Seems like they're seeing a whole city as cliche from their Westminster vantage point,” wrote one user.

“Liverpool probably wants the same as the rest of us. A decent wage, food on the table, no cuts to UC and Boris gone by midnight,” said another.

The museum displays 300 original items from the fab four such as George Harrison's Futurama guitar, John Lennon's Sergeant Pepper medals and the cello from "I Am the Walrus”.
