A major programme of maintenance works is due to get underway in the new year after an order was made approving the temporary closure of sections of motorway in north-west London.

A notice from National Highways in this week’s Barnet Borough Times details the extent of the overnight closures affecting the M1 and other major routes, and other restrictions that are set to be implemented while the works are carried out.

The order authorises the overnight closure of the M1 between Junction 1 (A406) and Junction 8 (A414) as well as sections of the M25, A1 and associated slip and link roads and hard shoulders.

The programme of works will start on or after January 2 and the M1 closures, between Junction 1 to 5, will be permitted to take place from 9pm to 6am every night when required.

The notice states the duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion.

The “programmed cyclical maintenance” includes bridge maintenance, drainage, lighting, signage, road markings and road studs.
