Transport for London (TfL) is warning of "significant delays" in the Edgware area that look set to last until the summer.

Repairs are being undertaken on the A41 Edgware Way bridge that runs over the M1 near Apex Corner.

The work begins on Friday April 1 and lasts until mid to late August, according to TfL.

The project will result in full night road closures as well as lane closures during the day.

TfL has said all main approach roads and surrounding roads, such as the A1 and streets in Edgware and Stanmore, will be "busy" and said people can expect "significant delays" to their journeys.

A number of bus routes will be disrupted with traffic on the A41 and M1 impacted.

Below is a Q&A of what work is taking place and when and how it is likely to disrupt people using the highways network.

How will the A41 be affected?

During the day, the A41 will be open but there will be lane closures in and around the bridge where work is taking place.

Throughout April and up until May 16, a single lane will be running eastbound between the hours of 5am and 10pm.

From May 10 to June 16, and from June 20-July 22, a single lane will be running westbound between the hours of 5am and 10pm.

However, there will be full night closures to contend with as well, which will often take place over weekends.

Between April 1-2, May 6-9, and June 16-17, the A41 will be closed eastbound between the Spur Road Roundabout and Apex Corner between the hours of 10pm-5am, with it shut until 6am over June 16-17.

Between May 9-10, June 17-20, July 15-18, and July 22-25, the A41 will be closed westbound from Apex Corner to Oakmead Gardens between the hours of 10pm and 5am.

How will the M1 be affected?

There will be overnight lane closures on the M1 but these are not due to start until late July and will only be between the hours of 10pm and 5am.

How will buses be affected?

TfL has warned passengers on the following routes will be delayed no matter what time they are travelling: 113, 186, 292, 384, 605, 606, 614, 644 and N113.

The 113, 186 and N113 eastbound routes will be diverted on the following dates: 1-2 April, 6-9 May and 16-17 June

The 113, 186 and N113 westbound routes will be diverted on the following dates: 9-10 May, 17-20 June, 15-18 July and 22-25 July

Several bus stops will be suspended on certain dates and at certain times. For more details visit the TfL website at https://bit.ly/3DqUiQ0

What is TfL's advice?

TfL says roads will be "extremely busy" and warned people to "expect significant delays".

For those doing shorter journeys, people are being recommended to walk or cycle, where possible.

Those travelling through the area to head into central London are being recommended to avoid the A41 and use the A1 or A10 instead, while those heading through Greater London are recommended to use the M25.
