A Potters Bar corporate director will take over the reigns at Hertsmere Borough Council.

Donald Graham, currently a corporate director with Newport City Council, was chosen as the new chief executive after a vigorous selection process and will join the authority in early autumn.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Graham said: "I am delighted to be appointed and look forward to working with an ambitious set of councillors to try to enable them to achieve those ambitions and further improve the quality of life for everyone in Hertsmere.

"I live in the borough and have a good grasp of the issues that are important to local communities. I want to develop an authority which is effective, efficient and delivers a highly-rated service.

"I want to ensure the voice of Hertsmere is heard beyond the immediate area and make it a shining example of local government regionally and nationally."

Council leader Morris Bright said: "This is an exciting time for local government and I am delighted that we have found such a strong candidate.

"A cross-party panel of councillors were unanimous in their decision and I am confident that Mr Graham will be a strong leader who will be able to drive the authority forward."

Sajida Bijle, director of resources, has been acting chief executive since October 2007 following the resignation of Eden Lee.

Cllr Bright added: "I would like to thank Sajida for her commitment over the last few months in what has been an exceptionally busy time for the authority."
