Four youngsters from a club in North Finchley competed at the World Championships in Sweden last weekend.

The students from Ashin-do Kai, based at David Lloyd Leisure, in High Road, returned home clutching a handful of gold, silver and bronze medals.

Nuri Shaikh, 14, won two gold awards and Hunisha Patel, 16, won a gold and silver medal, while Kieran Nunkoo, 11, picked up a bronze and Navin Patel, 13, took home two bronze medals.

The students had taken part in the AMA British National Championships in Sheffield on June 22, before representing Britain in Sweden.

Sensei Ricky Constantine, who helped prepare his students for the tournament, said: "The whole of Ashin-do Kai is incredibly proud of the achievements of our kids at these events. They all train incredibly hard - three or four times a week - and show dedication, commitment and focus every time they compete. They are a fabulous team who push each other on and always support each other."

The support of the other coaches and parents who help run the club was invaluable, he added.

Despite the club's name, the group practices the Wado-Ryu form of karate.
