Highgate Library reopening delayed by Haringey Council

Highgate Library closed in February to undergo major refurbishment to install a lift and disabled-accessible toilet, the second refurbishment in 21 years.

The library in Shephard’s Hill, off the main Archway Road, was meant to reopen this autumn, with new lighting, furniture, interior redecoration and a reconfigured floorplan.

But the reopening was postponed for last-minute changes to the plans by Haringey Council, made after a public consultation had taken place.

The Edwardian building first opened as a public library in 1902, on the site of a former priory. 

The refurbishment is part of a four-year public libraries ‘sprucing up’ programme costing just under £5 million.

Also closed for refurbishment is Muswell Hill Library, first opened in 1932, but said to be “on schedule” to be ready in the spring.

Library users at Highgate and Muswell Hill can use the newly-reopened Alexandra Park Library in Alexandra Park Road or Hornsey Library in Haringey Park, Crouch End. Alexandra Park reopened in February following similar work.
