Two days of heavy rain caused flooding in South Mimms yesterday.

The North Mymms Flood Alleviation scheme was used for the first time since its completion in 2004 to protect 12 homes from being damaged.

The Mimmshall Brook overflowed, stopping traffic in the area and prompting the Environment Agency to use the £2 million scheme to save the homes.

Graham Cowell, area flood risk manager for the Environment Agency, said: “We urge everybody who lives in these areas to be vigilant to the risk of flooding.

“Residents should move personal belongings out of harm’s way where possible and continue to listen to radio updates for the latest situation.”

During the last floods in the area, in October 2000, residents had to evacuate their homes after the brook burst its banks and flooded Warrengate Road and nearby houses.
