A woman who endured a horrific sex attack has spoken out about her ordeal to encourage other rape victims to come forward.

Julie Montgomery, 41, waived her right to lifetime anonymity this week, after a court heard how she was held captive for more than 36 hours by a Cricklewood man, who drugged her and raped her three times.

Charles Keown, 52, from Aeroville, kidnapped Ms Montgomery from a Barnet pub on May 29, 2008, by posing as a minicab driver.

When Ms Montgomery refused Keown’s sexual advances, he broke her jaw and took her to his house.

Keown was jailed for 15 years on Friday following a trial at Wood Green Crown Court, in which he had claimed Ms Montgomery had consented to sex.

Judge Browne QC told him: “Your treatment of the victim was nothing short of appalling.

“I have absolutely no doubt that her treatment at your hands has left an indelible impression on her and caused her considerable trauma.”

Ms Montgomery, who is studying accountancy and business management at the University of Westminster, told the Times Series she felt vindicated by the sentence.

“This is not going to change anything that happened to me, but at least it might stop him doing the same thing to someone else,” she said.

“This trial was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I feel fantastic now it is over.

“I am very glad I did it. I was a bit shaky at first, but it was all worth it.

“I’d like to use this opportunity to tell other women to come forward. It takes a lot of strength, but people like this need to be caught.

“It doesn’t matter how streetwise you think you are, there will always be people like this preying on women and we can’t let them get away with it."

However Ms Montgom-ery’s friend Tracy Kenny, 43, from Watling Avenue, Burnt Oak, said the sentence was “not enough”.

“It would be fine if 15 years meant 15, but he’ll be out in seven-and-a-half,” she said.

“It’s not enough for me. I went through the whole thing with her and it was dreadful.

“She’s not herself anymore. She used to be a free spirit, talking to anyone and everyone, but now she is the complete opposite, afraid of the dark, afraid of going out on her own. He has wrecked her life.”

Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) lawyer Valerie Benjamin said: “This was an awful attack on a woman who had been out drinking.

“Her ordeal went on for a day-and-a-half, from the Friday evening through to the Sunday afternoon.

“During this time she was suffocated to the point where she lost consciousness on a number of occasions.

“To enable the victim to give evidence in the trial, the CPS employed special measures to enable her to give video evidence and then to be cross-examined via a live link.”

Detective Inspector Tony Caetano, head of the borough’s team in charge of investigating sexual crimes, said: “This was a truly brutal and horrific case involving serious and repeated sexual assaults on one victim, which has left her physically and emotionally shattered.

“It was very difficult for her to stand up and give very personal and private evidence to the court, but she did it, and we can now all be thankful that this dangerous and predatory individual is behind bars, where he belongs — and will be for a considerable time.”

Keown was sentenced to 15 years for kidnap, false imprisonment, three counts of rape and causing serious bodily harm.

He has also been made to sign the sex offenders register, on which he will remain for life.
