HEALTH bosses have insisted disabled facilities are available at all the borough's drop in centres, despite misleading advice on some websites.

Patients who are referred to the Grahame Park Health Centre, in The Concourse, can find inaccurate information on the internet relating to the accessibility of services for disabled people.

Geoff Bradley noticed the discrepancy when he checked the Brentbrain.org.uk website after his wife was offered a selection of health centres by doctors that would enable her to have further treatment.

The site listed the address and contact details, as well as a section titled disabled access, which below read “no”.

The NHS's own Choices website also states “disabled parking is not available”.

Mr Bradley, 76, said: “When a relative virtually lives in a wheelchair and can't stand at all, you have to check out everywhere you go.

“Everyone who knows someone in a wheelchair will recognise this, you have to either go their first, or check the website for details or call them.

“When we saw it didn't have disabled access we were shocked that somewhere like this didn't have it.

“There were other places for us to go, but it did make it more difficult for us to organise.”

Content managers for the Brentbrain website, which includes online directories of community, voluntary and business groups, said they provide information based on what is provided to them.

But NHS Barnet responded by saying the centre is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) guidelines.

They said the centre is based on the ground floor and the corridors along the patient accessible areas of the building are wide enough for wheelchair access, with the majority of rooms being fitted with wider doors.

Natalie Cole, spokeswoman for NHS Barnet, said: “NHS Barnet takes its responsibility to provide buildings that cater for disabled people and are compliant with the DDA very seriously.

“The organisation strives to ensure easy access to our sites and services for all Barnet residents.”

She added the centre is used by a small number of wheelchair users every week but insisted disabled parking bays, a rap into the building and DDA suitable toilets are available.

She said:Both NHS Barnet receptionists and the GP receptionists have confirmed they have not received any complaints from these patients about access or the facilities within the building.

“NHS Barnet continues to monitor the suitability of all its premises to ensure that they are fit to provide modern, clean and clinically safe health care services.”
