The self-righteous condemnation emanating from the Labour and Liberal opposition groups concerning Councillor Brian Coleman’s much-publicised email exchange are rather hypocritical, to say the least (‘Mayor’s actions “damage” borough’’, Times Series, September 24).
The mayor’s remarks were sharp and somewhat colourful, but they followed a considerable amount of verbal harassment from a provocative blogger. However, those remarks are mild compared with some of the unsavoury language employed from time to time by opposition councillors in the council chamber, including a vulgar personal insult not so long ago shouted at a lady mayor, which everyone present heard, which passed completely unpunished.
Councillors should concentrate on what they are elected to do, rather than jump on personality bandwagons that will lead nowhere.
Cllr Brian Gordon, Conservative, Hale Ward, Barnet Council
