A new book documenting how Village Road in Finchley came to be has been written by life-long resident Peggy Wells.

Entitled Between Two Hedges, the 28-page booklet gives a gentle insight into the history of Finchley Garden Village which earlier this month celebrated its 90th anniversary.

The book reveals that at the same time Hampstead Garden Suburb was being constructed, the Finchley Co-partnership Society Ltd was aiming to initiate a development in Finchley which would "meet the increased demand of the less wealthy of the middle classes, who wish for small houses with more open and artistic surroundings than are afforded by the present day, stereotyped, suburban developments".

The area began to take shape in 1909, the most important feature, in community terms, being a central village green.

Miss Wells goes on to describe aspects of the development, which to an outsider may seem trivial, such as what materials were used to build the houses. But to anybody who has or continues to live in the road these particulars may be where the real interest lies.

Miss Wells, who is now in her 80s, chose not to talk about the book despite numerous calls from neighbours who believe her work should be recognised. If you are interested in buying a copy write to Peggy at 50 Victoria Road, Finchley N12.
