A CRAZED knife wielding man charged police who were attending to reports glass bottles were being hurled into a communal area in Colindale yesterday.

Officers were called to Jackdaw Court at about 1.30pm after receiving calls about a man throwing bottles out of his window.

When they approached the suspect, he ran at them with a knife, police said.

CS gas was used in an effort to fend off the man, but it proved ineffective.

A statement from Barnet police said: “The man continued his assault by throwing a dumbbell at the officers.

“The officers initially attending the scene had to protect themselves by taking refuge in a bedroom while backup was on its way.”

The man, described as about 40-years-old, 5ft 9” tall and of large build, was eventually detained with the help of armoured Territorial Support Group officers using shields.
