A WOMAN and her dog had a lucky escape as a lorry overturned in front of their car pouring tonnes of scrap metal across a busy junction this morning.

The crash happened at the roundabout junction of the A41 and A406 at Brent Cross when the lorry coming from the North Circular Road lost control and overturned in front of the car at about 11.15am.

Fire crews worked for 90 minutes to cut the driver of the lorry free from the wreckage, while police closed the off slip from the A41 northbound and the on slip to the A406 eastbound.

Karen Ross had been shopping at Brent Cross and was walking back to the tube station when the crash happened.

She said: “It was really surreal. I heard the driver honking his horn then I looked around and saw the lorry toppling over and heard a huge crash. As it did the metal started pouring out of it.

“I had to run down the road because I was scared the metal was going to hit me. I went back to see the woman in the car and she was really shaken. Her poor little dog was shaking as well, didn't have a clue what was happening.

“It was terrifying. I thought I was going to be crushed. If he hadn't sounded his horn I don't know what would have happened. It's lucky no-one has been killed.”

Council workers spread grit across the road to clear up leaking oil and police expect the road to be closed for several hours while the cleanup is completed.
