COSTUMES for a much-anticipated Hollywood film have been made by tailors based in a historic Hendon supplier.

The designs for the fourth instalment of the popular Pirates of the Caribbean series were made at Angels, in Garrick Road, and have been shipped out to the sets as filming gets underway.

The UK's longest-established costume supplier has provided outfits for the previous three films, and were asked again to be involved in the latest production, On Stranger Tides, which will star Johnny Depp in the role of captain Jack Sparrow.

Bosses at Angels could not reveal which characters they had dressed, but said it was still an honour to be involved in some of the most high profile blockbusters.

Director Emma Angel, the sixth generation of her family to head Angels Fancy Dress, said: “We are involved in a lot of big movies over the years, it is what we are known for.

“We have had a lot of famous people come through here for fittings, and if these walls could talk, there are a lot of stories to tell.

“We are the largest costume house in the country and films know they can get anything from us, from ancient costumes to uniforms and modern day outfits.”

The costume supplier, which was formed in 1840, has a history of designing outfits for some of the biggest film, TV and theatre productions, ranging from X-Men and Star Wars to Only Fools and Horses.

For more than 160 years, the company has had a six-storey fancy dress outlet in Shaftesbury Avenue and ahead of Halloween, a new store has opened at their Hendon head office.

Ms Angel said programmes like True Blood and the popularity of the Twilight saga have captured people's imagination for the holiday period.

She said: “These shows have had a huge impact on vampires, they are hot property.

“We get a special stock in for Halloween. It is the third biggest festival retail event in the calender year. I have seen it seriously grow.

“Halloween is an activity everybody can get involved in. It is fun and it is done with good humour. It is the start of winter and with all the doom and gloom, so people want to go out and have a good time in fancy dress.”
