THE decision to reject plans for the redevelopment of an “eyesore” building in North Finchley has been welcomed by one of the ward councillors.

The Government's planning inspector last week rejected an appeal by Jardine (north London) Ltd. to build flats on the site of the former Furniture Land outlet, in High Road.

The appeal came after Barnet Council denied two applications by the company to develop up to 72 flats, parking spaces and space for a library or medical facility.

But the inspector, Chris Frost, who oversaw the two day hearing in September, said the design of the scheme, which would be up to five storeys tall, would not provide enough garden or amenity space for new residents.

And Woodhouse ward councillor, Alan Schneiderman, said the decision represented a “great victory” for residents in the area.

He said: “Woodhouse councillors have consistently opposed these unacceptable proposals for the Furnitureland site.

“Everyone agrees that the current site is an eyesore and some form of development is needed but that should not mean that anything goes.

“We need to get the right type of development which respects the area and the living conditions of local residents."
