MEMORIAL services across the borough are planned for this weekend to mark Remembrance Day.

Events will be held in at least 12 locations, with councillors joining veterans, residents, and uniformed youth groups to pay tribute to servicemen and women who have died in conflict.

The mayor of Barnet, Councillor Anthony Finn, will attend a service at Hendon War Memorial and hold a two minutes silence, at 11am.

A parade will form in the car park behind the Town Hall, in The Burroughs, and march down the road at 10.35am.

Cllr Finn will then lay a wreath at the foot of the memorial on behalf of the borough and salute the the parade as it returns to the Town Hall.

There will also be a large march through Edgware, organised by the New Edgware Royal British Legion.

The parade will set off from the Legion's headquarters, in Parnell Close, before heading down Broadhurst Avenue, Broadfields Lane, Hale Lane, Station Road and High Street.

The Borehamwood Brass Band, army cadets and the Association of Jewish ex-servicemen and women (AJEX) will join the march, and Harry Hern, from the Legion, said he hopes the community will join in.

He said: “It was very good last year. Hopefully this year it will be a good turn out.

“With the conflicts that are going on around the world today, more people are showing an interest and taking part in services.

“Because of what is going on in Afghanistan a generation who weren't around during the World Wars is now able to relate to the importance of the day.”

Another ten services will be held at churches, memorials and synagogues in the borough.

A wreath will also be sent to Barnet's twin town Chaville in France, to be laid by Monsieur Denis Somereaux at the Town Hall, on behalf of the London Borough of Barnet.

Cllr Finn said: “Sunday presents us all with the chance to remember those servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country during conflict.

“Our thoughts should turn also to their loved ones, family and friends who are left behind.

“Remembrance Day also gives us an opportunity to think of those armed forces personnel who are currently serving in conflict zones across the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan.”
