YOUNGSTERS put all hands on deck and made a special ship model in recognition of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Pupils and teachers at Friern Barnet School in Hemington Avenue made the replica of the Royal Navy Minesweeper, HMS Fantome, out of paper poppies, which is now on display outside the Royal British Legion Club in Friern Barnet Road.

Poppy Appeal honorary organiser June Yates, who invited the children to take part in this year’s campaign said she was thrilled with their efforts.

She said: "I think it’s important for children to get involved and to do their bit."

Ms Yates added: "My dad was in the forces and my great-grandfather was in the trenches, so I am doing my bit for them, and for other servicemen."

The dedicated team at the social club, which is celebrating its second year as a poppy distribution centre, has already handed out almost 400 boxes.

Individual poppies, including silk Lady Poppies, stickers, badges and poppies for cars are also available in exchange for a donation.

Appeal co-organizer Pam Dobbins said the response they have had so far has been really good.

She said: "The people we have had stop by have been very generous. One lady pulled up in her car, jumped out, and gave me £60 for just one poppy."

Despite its current success, the poppy centre is keen to encourage more people to volunteer.

Ms Yates added: "In particular we would like to encourage young individuals – if they’re not working and have a bit of time then it would be great if they could lend a hand."

The centre is open seven days a week from 10am to 11pm on Thursdays, 10am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays and 10am to 10pm Sundays to Wednesdays.

Young and old are also invited to join the legion on Saturday, November 13 for a military display, and for an hour-long Remembrance Service on Sunday, November 14, starting at 10.30am.

Anyone wishing to volunteer can call the legion on 020 8211 9888 or appeal co-organiser Pam Dobbins on 07860 573 103.
