YOUNGSTERS and parents at an infant and nursery school in Whetstone raised more than £1,000 in just an hour to help victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Queenswell School, in Sweets Way, held an impromptu mini spring fair, with cakes, noodles and sushi provided by Japanese parents, just days after coming up with the idea.

Teachers and teaching assistants also helped out as the idea snowballed from the originally planned bake sale, with a beat the goalie game, hair braiding and nail painting among activities laid on last Wednesday.

The playground was also decorated with Japanese bunting, with the money raised going to the Red Cross Appeal for victims of the tsunami.
