ABOUT 400 people attended a memorial service for victims of the Holocaust in Hendon on Sunday.

Barnet Council's annual Holocaust Memorial Day service was held at the Ricketts Quadrangle in The Burroughs, to remember those who have lost their lives through genocide around the world.

Barnet Mayor, Councillor Lisa Rutter led a civic procession into the Quadrangle with the Alyth Youth Singers and the London Cantorial Singers performing during the commemoration.

Cllr Rutter said: “This was an opportunity for Barnet’s community to come together to remember the millions who were murdered through genocide around the world.

“By honouring the victims and learning the history of the Holocaust we will hopefully prevent future generations from making the same mistakes."

Guest speakers at the service included Naomi Lyne, a Year 13 history student from Ashmole Academy who talked about her recent experience of visiting Auschwitz, Sir Erich Reich, Chairman of the Kindertransport Group of the Association of Jewish Refugees, who spoke of his arrival in London in 1939 with his brothers from Poland.

Jan Williams, Dean of the School of Health and Social Sciences at Middlesex University also gave an address at the event.
