A scheme to help residents with impaired hearing liaise more easily with Barnet police was launched on Saturday.

Three police officers in Barnet have been trained in the use of British Sign Language and, as part of the Deaf Link scheme, another four officers are being trained with the support of Barnet College and the Jewish Deaf Association.

Another 21 officers and frontline staff were trained in deaf awareness in August to support the initiative.

Mira Goldberg, chairwoman of Barnet Deaf Forum, thanked the police for the provision of the service.

She added: "I know in time the Deaf Link scheme will enable deaf people to have confidence in police services and know that they will be understood."
