Pupils and staff from a Potters Bar school held two fun runs to raise cash that will help pay for children’s education in Zambia.

Mount Grace School, in Church Road, raised about £1,000 through a 20-mile sponsored relay from Tottenham Marshes to Hartham Common and a separate 5k run.

All of the money raised will be donated to Zambian school Greater Joy, in Kitwe, via charity Beyond Ourselves.

Mount Grace has had ties with the Enfield-based organisation for more than a year and has raised £2,500 in that time, enough to send six Zambian children to school.

Head of geography Claire Redgewell liaises between the school and the charity and is responsible for fundraising efforts.

The 28-year-old is hoping to increase ties with the school in Africa and organise an exchange trip in 2014.

She said: “Both events were a great success but we don’t just want to be a good Samaritan for now. We want this to be a long-term project.”

Forty people including headteacher Peter Baker, who is training for the London Marathon, took part in the 20-mile run, which was divided into eight legs, on February 26.

Those unable to participate in the longer event took part in the 5k run on February 22.

Ms Redgewell added: “The year 12s were brilliant, they organised it all themselves and raised a great amount of money while having fun.”
